NBA Throwback: Warrior Bogut dishin' up dimes

Before Nikola Jokic, it was Andrew Bogut who dazzled NBA courts with his passing as a big man.

  • Andrew Bogut's passing ability helped take the offense of the Golden State Warriors and Australian Boomers to another level
  • Bogut's career-high in assists came in 2011 when he dished out 11 against San Antonio
  • He won the 2015 NBA championship with the Warriors

Before Nikola Jokic took over the NBA, it was Aussie basketball legend Andrew Bogut who stunned fans, experts and opposition defences with his pinpoint passing from the centre position.

Yes, the Golden State Warriors were blessed with the greatest shooting backcourt in NBA history but Bogut made that offense click with his ability to set screens and distribute to the likes of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.

The former No.1 draft pick in 2004 will go down as one of the best passing big men of all time, especially after his time with the Warriors, where Golden State revolutionised how NBA teams played on the offensive end of the floor with their trademark movement off the ball. Bogut's skill with the ball in his hands at 7'0" tall allowed Curry and Thompson to punish defences for years and was ultimately, what led to Steve Kerr's team turning into a championship team in 2015 and eventually a dynasty.

While Bogut's career-high for assists in a season was with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2006-07 at three per game, where he was a first or second option offensively, he did it at the Warriors while having the ball in his hands less with so many creators filling out the Golden State roster.

The Boomers legend dished out 2.7 assists per game when the Warriors won the 2014-15 NBA championship and followed it up with 2.3 assists per game the following season (which the above video shows). But it wasn't so much the amount of assists Bogut dished out, which made for a long highlight reel but it was how he dished them out.

Behind the back flicks or through the legs passes to Curry and Thompson to sit behind and nail a three or no-look thunderbolts to teammates on backcuts — Bogut did it all.

And not only was it his skills which took the Warriors to another level at the NBA level, it was also what made Andrej Lemanis' offensive system such a perfect fit for the Boomers during Bogut's time with the Boomers. Just replace Curry and Thompson with the likes of Patty Mills, Joe Ingles and Ryan Broekhoff, especially at the 2016 Olympics — and you have a system which was the envy of so many other teams at the pinnacle of international basketball.

Seeing highlights like the above video from Bogut's career, one thing is sure, you could never sleep on Australia's best ever big man as a passer!

Time will tell, but is it something we see Bogut help the Sydney Kings implement after he joined the NBL powerhouse as an assistant coach?
